"Zanzibari" furniture is truly a collection of the various styles of furniture that were found in Zanzibar from its colonial heyday in the 1800s, up into the first half of the 1900s. Not necessarily furniture made in Zanzibar. It is from many parts of the colonial empire and international trade routes of the time including India, Arabia, Japan, America, England, and just about anywhere Zanzibari tradesmen reached.
Our hotel furniture is comprised of a collection of pieces that were mostly brought to us by local hawkers who scoured the islands of Unguja and Pemba offering furniture that had been owned by local families or hidden in storage from the pillage of Aristocratic homes at the time of the revolution in 1964.
Amazing pieces would sometimes arrive at our door brought by one of our familiar hawkers. “Kanzu”, Makame, Abdalla and others brought in a steady stream of interesting furniture to stock our rooms and public spaces.
In the photos here we show just a small example of the furniture collection at 236 Hurumzi.
