At the time of taking over this house, Red One was the only room occupied. The rest of the house had deteriorated beyond use and lay in varying states of danger. A few years after the revolution, a reclusive old uncle decided to move back to Zanzibar to live by himself. He partially fixed up Red One, cooked his meals on charcoal at the head of the staircase and used the bathroom in the hall, leaving the rest of the house to bats, rats and cats.
The roll-top desk is the only stick of furniture which was here when I took over the house, though other pieces have been bought back and put where they originally were.
